College Football Fans Select Oklahoma's Adrian Peterson as The Cingular / ABC Sports All-America Player Of The Week For The Second Time This Season

ATLANTA, Nov. 1 /PRNewswire/ -- College football fans nationwide have cast their votes, and for the second time this season, Oklahoma freshman running back Adrian Peterson is the Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week. Peterson was selected for the national honor after rushing for 249 yards and a touchdown on 33 carries in the Sooners' 38-35 win at No. 20 Oklahoma State on Saturday. Peterson now has eight consecutive 100-yard games to start the season and 1,272 yards for the year. He ranks third nationally with an average of 159 yards rushing per game.

Peterson, along with Purdue's Kyle Orton, are the only two players to win the Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week award twice this season. Peterson first won the award on October 10 after rushing for 225 yards on 32 carries in Oklahoma's 12-0 victory over Texas.

Peterson was one of four candidates for the Cingular/ABC Sports All- America Player of the Week, who are nominated by a panel of ABC Sports and ESPN college football analysts, led by John Saunders. The other finalists this week included: Michigan wide receiver Braylon Edwards, who caught 11 passes for 189 yards and three touchdowns in the Wolverines' 45-37 triple-overtime win over Michigan State; Michigan running back and last week's Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week Michael Hart, who rushed for 225 yards and a touchdown in the win; and North Carolina running back Chad Scott, who tallied 175 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in the Tar Heels' 31-28 upset over No. 4 Miami (FL).

The Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Week marks the first time in college football history where fans are in command and can vote on who they think deserves to be the All-America Player of the Week. The candidates are announced during ESPN "SportsCenter" following "College GameDay Final" each Saturday night. Fans have from that time until 8 p.m. Eastern Time on Sunday to text-message their votes or submit them online at http://www.abcsportsallamerica.com or at ESPN.com (keyword: cingular). The winner is announced during the 11p.m. Eastern Time broadcast of ESPN "SportsCenter" each Sunday.

    For fans voting on their wireless phones, they need only register one time. Then, each week, the four candidates for Player of the Week will automatically be sent to their wireless phones. Each time fans vote, they will be entered into a sweepstakes to win a trip to the Bowl Championship Series game of their choice or thousands of other instant prizes. Fans can vote as many times as they would like.

    On December 1, fans will also get a chance to determine who the best player in the nation is by voting for the Cingular/ABC Sports All-America Player of the Year. Fans will have until December 8 to choose from among five finalists - voting by either text messaging or online.

    The selection process will culminate on December 11 at 2 p.m. EST in a one-hour special on ABC Sports when the Cingular Wireless/ABC Sports All- America Player of the Year (selected by fans), and the All-America team (selected by the Football Writers Association of America), will be announced.
